Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

The outbreak of COVID-19 has either halted or postponed a lot of activities and plans thereby creating job uncertainties the world over. An uncountable number of posts (mostly exaggerated or untrue) are being circulated online especially on social media, further deepening the dark clouds that hang over the future. Personally, when I am not sure about any information or think sharing will cause my friends and loved ones some anxiety, I break the cycle by not sharing and I implore you to do same.

Despite the current lockdown I try to maintain my normal daily routine, but it is not always possible because apart from work responsibilities, the kids also require homeschooling supervision. Their school has made a learning platform available to keep them up to date with their studies, but I will leave this discussion for another day.

One good thing that has come out of this situation for me is that I get to spend more quality time with my children. 3 weeks before the lockdown, the entire family would go for a 30 minute brisk walk just to keep active. With the enforcement of a strict lockdown, we now keep fit by working-out to online training videos – our favorite is African dance HIIT workouts.

Working from home has its perks and what I love most about it is the fact that I don’t have to commute to work. I now have two extra hours dedicated for reading. There are fewer work interruptions and so I am more productive and get work done effectively. Sometimes I get carried away and work late into the night especially when I am enjoying the task but not complaining here. One funny thing that keeps happening is that sometimes my children show their faces into my laptop camera in the bid to find out who I am talking to during a conference call. It always cracks me up when they quickly retreat after realizing the party on the other side can see them too. I love that they are getting to understand what adults call work.

The lesson: the best way to deal with an out-of-control situation is to accept that we have no control! Let’s live each day to the fullest, whiles focusing on the best moments that come out this situation.

What is your COVID-19 silver lining story? Happy to hear about it. Hoping to create a string of positive stories to inspire someone who needs it.
